All Things Calypso
Maxine comes from a large extended family of musicians. Her father Max, along with her Uncle Ralph was one of the first pioneers to bring Steel Band Music to the UK from Trinidad in the 1950s. Maxine’s brother Paul is a hugely respected Calypso musician and World Music Promoter based in London and her cousin, Mark Cherrie is a widely sought-after session musician specialising in keyboards and Tenor Pan, whilst also being extremely involved in music production as a Composer, Arranger and Producer. Maxine therefore inherited a deep love of Calypso and Steel Band Music and was initiated into the family business; The Cherry Pickers Steel Band; at the approximate age of 13. She has long ago been promoted from the ‘Doo Doop’, a 2 pitched percussion instrument to the Tenor Pan, a fully chromatic 2 octaved instrument and most enjoys the gigs where she gets to play alongside her family. With her niece and Goddaughter, Tania, now also performing with The Cherry Pickers, as well as being a fantastic Traditional Steel Combo, it is a wonderful family legacy.
